It was a really good night. I have met my best friend and his Belgian colleagues. Finally I could speak a little in English. It was really exciting. Especially for me because I haven't met foreign people for a long time.

The action takes place wholly at a certain time in the past (last night). It would be incorrect to use a different tense.
