Street musicians will " pass around the hat" in the hopes of being given money by the people they are entertaining.

Very often, yes. It is a tradition that a street musician will leave his hat on the floor while he plays. Passers-by throw a donation of money into the hat for him.

In a similar way, 'Pull names out of a hat' means to draw names at random in a sort of lottery.

Hello Bev,

Do you say "to pass around"?
I figure in the UK people say only "to pass round" and never "to pass around", right?
