Do you have a dictionary?

If not, there are plenty of online ones, including some which provide specific help for English learners:
http://freenuts.com/free-online-english-dictionaries/

For example if you click on the speaker icon above the definition for 'illness' in the following link, you will hear the word spoken (You can choose whether to hear it spoken with an American accent or a British accent.)

Illness means sickness. So when it says "My sister had an illness." it means the same as "My sister was sick."
