Aren't these two verbs weed / toss very similar in their meanings? In my opinion both fit well into the context of the sentence, although there might be some slight difference between them as to the situations in which they are used.

Any light about that difference?

We do not use 'toss out' to talk about shortlisting people, only weed out.
