Before saying about the chinese meaning of my name, I would like to say about your name. It has also special meaning to me. The name of my very first girl friend also means fragrance like yours. I met her when I was a pupil, so I gave her a nick name F7 ( F : fragrance, and July is the month when I met her in the first time :D). I saw these things in my first English-Vietnames dictionay. After that, I've forgoten every things and now I sometimes can not understand why her nickname begins with letter F ....
You can believe me. I can confirm that everything I said is pure 100% of truth. It's a exciting name to me.
My ancestors are Chinese. I am the 9th-generation, my daughter is the 10th generation. Maybe, I'll talk about it later. My family is LAM, it means FOREST, this word is built from 2 trees in Chinese (2 woods) (you know it). I know that many Chinese have the family LIN, and it tranfers to LAM in Vietnamese, but I don't understand why. Can you have a explain ?
The last thing I would like to tell you now is I am here for learning English. So please, we'll think about how to help each other to have progresses.
Yours ! |

Hi,Lam Giang: Thanks for your messages! So can you speak some chinese? I know you still keep some chinese customs just like "Spring Festival " That is really interesting! I don't know when and how chinese cultures had been introduced there. It seems that there is a long long story to tell :) Maybe it was in Yuan Dynasty or Ming Dynasty that your ancestors moved to Vietnam . Personally , i think it was the time called "the expansion of China". Many chinese began their new lives there . Meanwhile, lots of cultures and customs had been kept well . Just like your surname , LAM is similar to LIN (chinese) It means groups of trees or forests, but i don't know why it is written as "LAM' rather than "LIN" :P :P Also i guess your name "Giang" is something similar to "Gang"(chinese) meaning "iron" or "strongness" :P :D Indeed we have many similarities in languages and customs . I would like to develop interests in them  |

Giang means "RIVER", not "IRON". FangFang, in Vietnamese, is written as Huong Huong (I guess).
I had a look and found that Lin can be a pinyin transcription of one of several Chinese surnames, with 林 (pinyin L?n) being overwhelmingly the most common. The literal meaning of this surname is "forest". In Hong Kong and in Vietnam, the name takes the form "Lam" (but is actually pronounced phonetically "Lumm"). Lin is the 2nd most common surname in Taiwan, with a population of 9% Taiwanese (2.1 million, 2005 estimate), only behind Chen. In mainland China (except Fujian) Lin is less common. (copied from wikipedia). So there is not a clear explanation.
I would like return to your name. FangFang is your nickname, but it can be seen as a pet name, isn't it ? In films, I usually see that Chinese girls have 2 sounds repeated in their names. Are these names pet names ? And Do these girls have another official name ? |

Morning ,Lam Giang: Partly you are right, we do have repeated names that sound not so formal . It is something like "Jonhy , Tommie or Pattie etc." :D You know, it is nice to be called with pet names . But it isn't always the case, some chinese have their names repeated not for "pet fun" . One of the reasons ,i think , is that their names seem to be so easy and simple . They don't want to be called like that way . In fact there is a trend that many persons have the same names! Just imagin when someone calls your name in a public occasion you would be shocked to find there are another two guys with the same names standing up! How embarrassed ! :P :P So it is feasible to "double" your names! :D In fact ,now babies are suggested to be named with more meanings ,meanwhile , it is helpful for the Police to find registered persons ! I think some have their formal names, but mine is the same. :P I think you know chinese cultures quite well, and i 'd like to know those chinese customs in Vietnam. You are still using chinese languages ,right? It sounds so amazing but interesting!! Would you like to introduce some here?  |

Hi FangFang !
Frankly, I don't know any Chinese word, except my family name  . I've just haven my daughter begin a starter course in Chinese language. She is especially interested in Chinese language and I hope there will be something to say in next some months.
In my opinion, people usually say about the differences between Chinese and Vietnamese culture, not about the similarity . Because these cultures are very close. Although, words are pronounced quite differently. |

Hi,Lam Giang: Thanks for your post! Yeah, it is a big topic when we are discussing the culture discrepancy between China and Vietnam. I am impressed by the first point you mentioned . It is the truth that chinese overseas have their community , which makes them feel to be in homeland . Chinese may not be so intimate at home but when abroad they would be more friendly to each other. I don't know why it is , maybe we have been educated with strong and permanent traditions that won't be forgotten wherever you are . Chinese put family to the first , this "family " includes more meanings , and to some extent i think , that our belief of integration has been enhanced not only by Chinese Ancient Cultures but by the Socialism System. It is good ! Every "Spring Festival" we will be eagering to see CCTV 's programmes . That is a cozy time for all the chinese families , specially those chinese overseas ! Whoever you are and wherever you are , everyone shares the same feelings. Sometimes i think it is just because of our strong cultures that make you never forget "I am a chinese and i am proud of being that!" It would be meaning more for those friends overseas. About the principles i am not sure of that . It depends on the varieties of personalities. I think it can't be taken as the difference :P :P Maybe i didn't understand you very well, well, about our character differences there are much to say ,Maybe a novel isn't enough.LOL :D :D . But i am trying to learn from you :D You write well , i didn't find something sensitive here, hehehe, don't worry, of course, you are welcome and free to give viewpoints here, Just within the limit of discussions   |
